In 2006 I was talked into buying a Maton guitar by my friend Kim. He was lead singer guitarist in a blues band that famously got to play at the Bridgetown Blues Festival in Western Australia. Anyway, I was coming over to his house and singing while he played guitar, and singing at home on a karaoke machine that judged your performance, and mainly getting tomatoes.

Kim told me I should learn to play guitar. I told him I have always wanted to, but missed my chances when I was young, and it was too late.

But after some advice and encouragement from him, I walked into a music shop and bought the best guitar I could afford, a Maton EM225C. The guy in the shop asked if I wanted to play it?. I was 33 years old and had just given up years of very heavy drinking. I told him I wouldn’t even know how to strum it. He looked at me like I was crazy, and he was right.

After that I went to guitar lessons once a week, did all my homework, tried to learn the next bit in front of the teacher, and tried to learn songs on the side.

A year later I had moved to Far North Queensland. I fell in with a bunch of musos, and one night a friend got me to play a three cord song on bass with the band

Well after that the Maton guitar sat in the corner, whilst myself and the Spector Legend bass I bought thereafter went to lessons.

I played in different bands around the Tablelands. The pivotal point was when it was decided that I was going to be the singer. After writing my own songs and performing them, I had to step up to singing covers. It was at that point I learned I would have to sing in a higher pitch. So I spent night after night at home trying to emulate Ozzy Ozbourne, Cream and Bad Company to name a few. The learning process is ongoing, with me still doing singing lessons and learning bass lines to this day

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the show.
